When arriving at the Berkshires from nearby New York, Albany, Hartford, Boston or other distant locales, the first stop a visitor often makes is the village of West Stockbridge located in Western Massachusetts. This picturesque town, straddling the Williams River, is just off the main highways coming and going. The Williams River Basin is formed by several brooks, lakes and ponds converging north of town, collecting at Shaker Mill Pond, flowing over the dam at the old Shaker Mill, and through the heart of town.
